Tintwistle walk with Eric

Ten of us enjoyed Eric's walk today which started at Tintwistle. A steady climb took us onto wide open moorland and over rather boggy peat, where Joyce and John fell together down a grass covered hole! No real injuries, though they were both aching more than usual by the end of the walk.Lunch was taken overlooking Chew Reservoir.
We carried on to Laddow Rocks and followed the Pennine Way down into the Woodhead valley where the last few miles were pleasantly flat through the wooded fringes of the reservoirs.A clear fresh day with only one short shower, a fair amount of sunshine and some good views.
We were pleased to have the company of Joyce on this her first walk with us and to welcome a new recruit, Gary, a keen walker whom we hope to see again. Thank you Eric for organising and leading this enjoyable walk.

A FANTASTIC NIGHT !!!

Rather skeptically I joined Les, Glenys and Campbell at Porkies to hear “The Churchfitters” .I had no idea what to expect, but I was bowled over by this sensational group. Their music almost defies categorization-“Irish folk rock” perhaps?!

This group of four, with lead singer/instrumentalist Rosie, played an amazing selection of inventive and stimulating pieces. Their eclectic range of instruments-violin, guitar, banjo, ukulele, clarinet, flute, lute, tin whistle, triangle, drums, cymbal and maracas with things of their own invention- a suitcase drum, a cigar box 4 note bass, spoons, truncated bass utilizing kitchen utensils, and a hauntingly melodious saw, not to mention their own vocal chords- allowed these accomplished musicians to demonstrate their remarkable talents.

For me, a dedicated classics buff, it was a thrilling and at times moving experience- an great alternative to the usual pub night and incomparably better than a night in front of the box.

THANK YOU LES !!

Greetings from Turkey

Here is another update from Paul & Halina:
A big hello from a still very hot Turkey, walking now a couple of times a week, hard going though as still sticky and humid.  We are back around 16th November. Regards to all.

This is the gulley the walker from the Blackpool area fell down a month or so ago. Special search teams failed to find him and gave up after a few weeks. Rumours of him being abducted were being bandied about, or he had done a Reggie Perrin but his body was eventually stumbled on by a Turkish walker hiking up the gulley from the bottom. He was an expierienced walker but you should not really trek alone in unfamiliar territory.

John's Sunday walk

A good turnout of 15 today. We drove through thick fog on Rushop Edge to start the walk at Bradwell. Walking at a low level for the first couple of hours enabled us to enjoy the scenery and the mist to lift. The sun came out during elevensies and it was quite hot. Unfortunately it didn't last, but the day remained fairly clear. With virtually all the climbing behind us we had a relaxing drink at The Barrel at Bretton before the return with it's steep descent and panoramic views to Bradwell. All seemed to enjoy the walk and we were especially pleased to welcome two new members-Bruce and Jackie- whom we hope to see again.

Macclesfield Walk.

Ten intrepid and brave members met at Clough House car park with the sole intention of scaling the north face of the Matterhorn (the Cheshire version). With enough provisions packed for elevens’s and lunch we set of with the aim of making base camp one at Chapel House by mid morning. With the warm sun on our backs, spirits were high and we indeed made elevens’s in good time. Afterwards, we continued to make good time, enjoying some respite from the relentless sun as we traversed our way through Macclesfield forest. But then – disaster! On our route round Ridgegate reservoir we all saw what could only be described as a dog attempting to swim the entire length of the reservoir – because, well, that’s what is was. We all stood rooted to the spot wondering if Fido (or was it Rover?) would make it. Well, he did, but only after the most circuitous route you could imagine – good job he wasn’t leading this expedition! Anyway, much time had been lost and we hadn’t even had lunch. So, onwards and upwards we went stopping half way up Nessit Hill for lunch before leaving base camp two for the final push to the summit. We donned our crampons – and then took them off when we realized there was no snow or ice to contend with – and headed up to the summit. It was a long hard slog but we made it. The views were out of this world – if you looked up, and of the Cheshire plains if you looked horizontally, and of your boots if you looked down! But we couldn’t stay up there for too long – there was beer and crisps to be had in the Crag Inn below to celebrate our achievement. So off we trundled with smiles on our sun-burned faces and a sense of immense satisfaction in our hearts.

Thursday walk

Nine of us met at Top Lock Marple for a pleasant stroll along the Middlewood Way to Higher Poynton before turning back and heading for the Dog & Partridge for a Carvery Meal (£3.50). Ian & Rosemary joined us for the meal which was a choice of three meats and as much veg as you could fit on your plate, although one of our number went for seconds (veg only).
When we were all full we set off back along the canal to Marple.
A cool dull day but at least it stayed dry!

Jack is kindly planning to test out another venue for us for the next walk & lunch, so watch out for details.

Family Cycle Ride - Manifold Trail

Not a great turn-out last Sunday (4 riders in total) but we had a good time anyway. No photos I'm afraid, Chris dropped the camera, but the trail is very good, there are caves, a dried up river bed and quite a lot of wildlife.

We managed to keep up with the kids and did the full 16 miles with the bribe of a stop at the ice-cream/tea shop near the end.

Whaley Bridge to Errwood - longer version!

A fine day that contradicted the rather dismal forecast enabled 13 of us to enjoy this pleasant and scenic walk. Our coffee stop afforded a panoramic view of Coombs Reservoir form where we climbed steeply over the hills and descended to Errwood Reservoir in the Goyt Valley. On the promised flat at last we continued for afternoon tea at Taxal church and completed the walk just before the first spots of rain. Thanks to our accomplished guides, Geoff and Sue for this very enjoyable day out.

PS: I was asked to make Jack aware that we actually went to 4 reservoirs on this walk, setting a new record!

LLangollen walk

There was 8 of us - we began at Llantysilio Green picnic area just out of Llangollen we started with a steep climb up to Velvet hill with some very good views of the vale of Llangollen and the steam railway. We then dropped down to the valley passing Valli Crucis Abbey ruins before  joining the Clwydian way and heading up towards the impressive crags and screes of Eglwyseg mountain. By lunchtime we had joined the Offa's Dyke footpath which was followed southwards back towards Llangollen on the way back we climbed to the top of Dinas Bran where we inspected the ruins of the fort and enjoyed views of the town below we than followed the path down to the town and called for refreshments at the canal wharf tea room before following the canal towpath back to the Horseshoe fall and the car park .
The walk was superbly planned & led by  Sue & Nigel

Three Reservoirs with Jack

This week eleven of us, including two new walkers, we went to an area not usually frequented by the group. We were about four miles north of Bolton just beyond Bromley Cross. We started out from the car park near Jumbles Reservoir. We passed through Jumbles Country Park walking most of the way round the reservoir. After coffee we entered Edgeworth a pretty Pennine village. Next we did a half circuit of Wayoh Reservoir before having lunch. By this time some of us were getting thirsty so a short stop was made in the newly re-opened Strawberry Duck. Our final Reservoir was Turton and Entwistle, before heading up onto the moors by way of the Witton Weavers Way. On dropping down off the moors we stopped at Turton Tower, an Elizabethan house. Here we made a stop for afternoon tea and cakes. It was then just a short hop back along Jumbles Reservoir to the cars.

So there were four refreshment stops on one walk - I suspect Lesley was in charge of the schedule.

Family walk on Mam Tor

Turnout for the walk was 3 families amounting to 6 adults and 6 children. We followed the steps up to Mam Tor, then walked down to Hollins Cross, Molly setting the pace and the rest of us keeping up. We had lunch just below the ridge at Hollins Cross but were an easy target for the sheep that roam in gangs there and mob the unwary. We then carried along the ridge to Back Tor where Jackie, Clint and Molly turned back and dropped into the valley to avoid the wind (did I hear a rumour of a swift pint in Castleton?). The rest of us carried on to Lose Hill then walked down into Hope (Helen and Phil having gone back to get the cars).

No photos for the website, I'm afraid - I managed to lose our camera towards the end of the walk!

Alsop en le Dale to Parwich

There were 14 of us on the walk. Two cars full were late reaching the start point due to a lot of cows crossing the road. They seemed to go on for ages and Sue thinks the farmers should have served tea & biscuits to those waiting in cars.
We parked the cars in a layby, crossed the road passing a caravan park then across the fields to Parwich where we had lunch under a tree on the village green.
We walked back along the Tissington Trail, managing to avoid being run over by all the cyclists, to Alsop en le Dale. The walk was about 8 miles and yes the weather was lovely

Greetings from Turkey

Its Paul and Halina here in Turkey, an extremely hot and arid Turkey I might add, I believe the "barbeque summer" you were all promised has never materialised, whats new! How is Campbell faring, is he any better. Most days here it is over 100f so you can imagine walking is totally off the agenda at the mo, we are surrounded by mountains but unfortunately the Turks look at you with puzzlement when you tell them your hobby/sport is walking up and around mountainsides for pleasure. It will probably be mid Sept before we can get out properly, however till then we will just have to relax and do nought by the pool. Regards to all. Dont know if you will get the piccy, it is our local mountains, Babadag on the right is 2000mts and Mendos a little bit less, they both look very high and daunting but I have got to do one of them before we come back to uk. In fact Babadag looks remarkably like Tryfan .

and more...
It would be nice to see our message and piccy on our webpage. The problem at the mo with photographs is that it is very hazy all the time so they look unclear. Took a load more today but not looked at them yet, we drove deep into the mountains and the scenery was awesome but its just too hot to do ought yet.  Have included some more photos of our area. Give our regards to all especially Campbell, hope he's soon fit and well. Hot off the press maybe going up Babadag on Friday morning, apparantly a very early start!

Three Peaks weekend

A few of us went camping in Horton in Ribblesdale in the rain. That turned out to be a minor issue compared to the problems experienced with the all night rowdiness of the occupants of 3 tents (not from our group). The issue culminated with a vist from the police at 3:30 AM on saturday morning !

Most campers had very little sleep that night. Nevertheless, Helen Marsh and boyfriend Jonno achieved the round of the 3 peaks within the 12 hour deadline.

Millers Dale with Steve

10 of use set off for an adventure from Millers Dale station. The walk, led by Steve started innocently enough, and we all marvelled at having a dry day after so much rain in the last couple of months. We spent most of the morning walking uphill, although nothing too strenuous and we sat on the green at Chelmorton to eat our lunch and debate whether to go to the pub or not. Finally we decided yes, so we took over the covered smoking area outside leaving the smoker to stand elsewhere!
Then it was time to set off for the Indiana Jones part of the walk. This involved descending the slippery limestone path into Churn Hole followed by two sets of stepping stones along Chee Dale and then the highlight of the walk - lots of mud! After much slipping and sliding we made it through to a tea stop on a dry grassy slope then headed back to the cars.
Thanks Steve, we may have complained a lot but we enjoyed it really

Glossop walk 19th July

3 intrepid walkers and 2 dogs( Lolly & Po) braved the elements for a terrific walk from the Grouse Pub even though it only stopped raining for 20 minutes while we managed to have lunch it did not dampen our spirits. the 11 mile walk led by Scott found us walking along paths that were streams and crossing streams that had become rivers although enjoyable all the same.

Magpie Mine & Monsal Dale

Ten of us headed off from the delights of Bakewell, in the surrounding countryside.  Over the hills to Over Haddon, caught a quick shower, thankfully under a tree, and then past Magpie Mine.  Deep Dale & Monsal Dale were beautiful with the summer flowers and foliage, and the drinks and ice-creams at Monsal Head were much enjoyed.

Final stroll along part of the Monsall Trail, then a last cross-country jaunt, back into Bakewell.
