    Snowdon Ranger Hostel weekend

Last weekend  members of the group stayed at Snowdon Ranger Hostel on the south  west side of Snowdon.

On Saturday waking  up to a  sunny morning ( Pam had to use her special sun anti- wrinkle cream!!!)   one small group  ascended  Snowdon via the Ranger path believed  to be the oldest path to the summit. We were afforded fine views of Mynydd Mawr  across Llyn Cwellyn . From the summit we traversed Bwich Main  and descended   by the Rhy Ddu path to   clotted cream  scones and tea in the village, before retuning to the hostel for beers and a home cooked meal. Others went up the Nantlle ridge  and returned by taxi!!!!!!!

    Pen-y-Gent Walk

A one and a half hour drive to Horton in Ribblesdale preceeded the walk which was attended by 10 intrepid explorers. A recent new member , Helen, provided a smiling face as she attended for her first group walk.

A mobile phone call was received at 11:00 AM from a missing intrepid explorer appologising for his absence and explaining that he had only just woken up. He didn't mention a hangover but he did state that he had been to a wedding the day before. No names are mentioned here.

Pen-y-Gent is 2273 feet high (or 694 metres for those of you who prefer metric.) The weather was glorious, with the sun powering through a minor heat haze. Definately one of the best days for weather in months !

The ascent of the mountain was tackled in just over 2 hours and was achieved prior to lunch. Excellent views were enjoyed including:
Whernside, Ingleborough, Fountains Fell and Ribblehead viaduct.

After a steep descent we were rewarded with the sight of a bird of prey being exercised in flight by its owner.

To end the walk the Pen-y-Gent cafe refreshed us with pints of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. A good time being had by all.

    Wilmslow to Mobberley walk

We drove to Lindow Common to start a pleasant walk lead by Jack. It was a bit muddy in places but otherwise very easy going with lots of oppurtuniteis for Howard to fill his lunchbox with blackberries. Some of the paths were not easy to follow from the map due to diversions and Campbells bare legs suffered a buit from the nettles.
The weather was not as nice as had been forecast but at least it did not rain.
We had a pubstop at the Black Bull in Mobberley, then headed back some people taking advantage of the marrows on offer from an allotment.
For anyone wondering about the Ladies Humane Educational Society see http://www.nhes.org/
    thanks Jack, another nice walk

    Teggs Nose walk

15 brave souls ventured out for Peter and Helen's first walk as leaders, with 3 new ladies.  John G. noted that this was the first time that women outnumbered men (8 to 7), and led to the quote of the walk, “We might have a chance…”
Starting at Teggs Nose, the group headed up to the view points, to be greeted with clouds and Macclesfield, less than a mile away. Not too disheartened, we trudged on down to the reservoirs to make our way to Macclesfield forest for elevenses and a chorus of crossbills (thanks for the bird info. Sue H.)  15 then became 13, as Pete & Sue had a better offer of a pub lunch, and bade us farewell.
The rest of us continued through the forest and fields to lunch, overlooking Lamaload Reservoir, closely followed by the darkest cloud ever.  Thankfully, this diverted away from us at the last minute, although by the time we got to the ‘Rising Sun’ pub in Rainow the heavens opened, and we enjoyed listening to the rain bouncing off the pub conservatory! The final leg headed south-ish back towards Teggs Nose, where we did, eventually, get quite good views over Manchester and the Cheshire plains.
Thanks to everyone for an enjoyable day, and hope to walk with you again soon…

    Thanks
    Peter and Helen
