August 14 South Head On Sunday 12th August Sue & Geoff led a second attempt to conquer the summit. The previous attempt in February had been relocated to Lyme Park due to severe winds but even that was cut short after lunch due to a snow storm.
Anyway the day started bright and sunny, followed by a heavy rainstorm before we even reached the meeting place. En route the leaders realised that they had forgotten the map (our defence is that our house is in disarray due to renovations and our "kitchen" is currently spread around the other rooms in the house). A quick call to Sue Adams ensured that we would have a map available by the time we picked her up.
10 people were on the walk, starting from the Quarry car park at Hayfield. We set up through the campsite and up towards the Mount Famine ridge but found that the path had been changed slightly so out came Pam's map - a new double sided one and of course we wanted the middle of the reverse side so a spot of origami was required. We found our route which was an improvement on the old one and set on up the hill. The views were exceedingly good today, due to the sunshine and rain that came and went during the day the light was excellent. On and up we went, cagoules going on and off, then down slightly before the ascent of South Head. As we reached the top we were in the middle of the heaviest downpour of the day and the views had disappeared.
Down again to follow the path to Edale Cross & Brown knoll. Luckily the strong wet winds and rain were at our backs and they cleared by the time we turned back to follow the hill around and back down to the car park.
All in all it was a lovely day. thankyou all for coming
Sue August 11 Ian's pub nightIan pub night night was at the Woolpack Brinksway. Nine in all. Two hand pump beers were on but it soon went down to one. August 10 Madeleine's 70th BirthdayOn Sunday 5th August a group of us assembled to celebrate Madeleine's 70th birthday with a trip from Whaley Bridge canal basin on the Judith Mary. After a slightly late start due to traffic hold-ups on the A6 we set off, on a lovely sunny day for a trip to New Mills, returning via the newly restored Buxworth Basin spur of the canal. We were treated to a splendid buffet meal of meats, salmon and salads, followed by apple pie or trifle, all prepared onboard the narrowboat.
Madeleine made a speech to thank everyone for joining her and telling us some stories about the people who welcomed her to Stockport YHA Group 20 years ago, most of whom were on board.
After the boat trip we went for a short walk around Whaley Bridge, along the disused railway line and returning across the Toddbrook Dam.
Thankyou Madeleine, it was a lovely day and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we all did.

August 01 Camping weekend in BalaLast weekend few of us went camping to Bala in North Wales. Car camping. Joan was already there and Phil and Shirley was starting to put their tent up. We found a spot and just got the tent up before the rain came, but not too heavy. time to try the local water out and it was a fine 2 pints+ I must say. After a 2 hour drive it just finish the night off. Off we went back to camp and everyone was in bed a sleep. So me and helen had more whiskey for ourselves. Next morning we wake to a lovely day. First thing get the brew on. Nothing better than a hot tea in sat in your sleeping bag. Then bacon butter. Just sets the day up for you. By now everyone was up and about and colin, helen and joan head up Aran fawddwy (905). Joan turns back halfway and we carry on up with fine views all round. By 3.30 we set off back down and just get back for the BBQ the Phil had set going. John and Vince join us as they are staying in the hostel in Bala. But no sooner had we started eating the heavens open and as true Brits we carry eating but soon we head for the pub as the glasses were soon filling up with water. Not sure vince and john would like camping. Next day Phil, shirley and the boys. Plus joan get on the stream train and me and helen do a small walk north of the village. But soon we ran into trouble. Finding the paths. After hacking across fallen forest ground we give up and lay in the sun before we turn back. |
