March 26 Joan's walk on Sunday 25th March8 people came on Joan's walk from Monsal Dale to Ashford in the Water which she led all the way. As there were no digital cameras on the walk, we do not have a photographic record yet (prints may be available later for scanning). The morning started off overcast but it turned out to be a very good day. Apart from some heckling from John everybody behaved themselves!.
March 24 Fridays Pub Night Little Jack cornerRosmary Pub night at the The Little Jack Corner. must have change landlords in the last few months. Four handpump beers were on offer (blacksheep, XB) but we moved on at 9.15 pm to The Crown heaton lane. The Music was loud, but if you said the wrong thing or bump into some one. Not sure what reaction you would get back. So we left and headed down to the Crown. Lot nicer down there. March 22 Cycling The Roof Of The WorldOn Wednesday it was John's slide show on his cycling Trip to Nepal. John gave a excellent show with plenty of stunning photos. His trip was a ctc cycling holiday going though Nepal and Tibet. Visting Everest Base camp. The going look rough in places but was rewarded with fine landscapes. The only down side of the trip that i think John did not like was going to bed at 8.00pm. All that drinking time he would loose. He was camping most nights where the tents were put up for them. Odd nights they were in a hotel. The outside toilet looked a lot better then last weeks slide show. Well over a 1000 photos he took. Another four slide shows there John. March 18 Sue & Geoff's walk Sunday 18th MarchThe plan was to take a walk from Chinley to South Head but the weather forecast was not promising: snow coming south across the country. The first call came at 8am and by 8.15 all the people who had told us they would be coming had phoned to say they were wimping out.
"Thank goodness for that" we thought - we'll nip down to Torkington Park to check there is no-one else there then come back into the warm.
So we ate our breakfast looking out at the trees bending in the wind and the snow/hail flurries and feeling glad that we would not have to venture out. Off we went to Torkington Park to be joined by Pam, Colin & Helen and Harvey - are these people mad??
Anyway we agreed that it was too windy to go up to South Head and Mount Famine so we went to Disley and walked into Lyme Park, into a blizzard! It did not last long but it certainly stung the face. We stopped for a tea break at the picnic tables near the car park before sheltering from another fall of snow. Before long we decided to head back to the cars, although we did not take the direct route down the road.
Walk finished at 12.30!
John's Pub NightJohn's pub night on friday was at the Boars Head in stockport. Eleven members came out for the night. Ian, Rosemary, Les, Helen, Colin, Chris, Paul, Pam, Pete & Sue, plus John. The beer was cheap. Which pleased most. Sue was doing her dating and matching up members.
To who? Well you should have been there. March 16 Friday MatineeAntarctica talkOn Wednesday we had Kevin Osborne giving us a talk about a trip to the Antarctica. After a slight delay due to software and macs we got under way. He made the trip In December 2005. Saling on a Russian ship with the trip funded by the photography he would do out there. He encounted some rough seas. gale force 11. Wind chill factor -60. camping in the snow. Using a bucket and black bin bag for a toilet. Dont think many from the group would go.
His photographs were stunning. Pure blue skys and deep blue seas. He spent many hours during the day sat on penguim sh?? getting stunning photos in very harsh weather. At the end he shown a few of hs other trips of Chile and Bolivia. Which he will show again on another show.
Most of his photos can be look at over the web at www.turnersretreat.com/ or www.KevinOsborne.co.uk March 11 Clint Cycle RideSunday saw Clint leading the first cycle ride of the year. With look the weather was good. But was still on the cold side. Lovely spring day. In total 6 riders came along. setting off from the Deanwater Hotel and heading south though the cheshire lanes. It was not long before we had the first flat tyre of the day. Colin hit a pot hole and one flat tyre. Quick Change of the inner tube. Old one thrown in the local bin and we were off again. Trying to find our pub for lunch. Which came and some of us had the soup to warm the inside of you up. But we were sat in the beer garden.
Then a few miles back to the cars stopping off at the tea shop for tea cakes and tea.
Nice easy ride to get going after the winter months Harvey Pub Night. the GriffinFriday night saw a lot of us down at The Griffin in Heaton Mersey. In all there was about 15. One new person. We found seats in the non smoking area which was nice. the usal chick check went on. Ken Hodgson came up from London. so that must mean theres a pub crawl on some where over the weekend. Our John Gregory was back after his holiday to Goe. Showing his nicely new tan. But the jet lag was getting to him. March 08 Fairtrade EveningAs part of Fairtrade Fortnight we held a Fairtrade Taster session on Wednesday 7th March. Available to try were various wines, juices, cakes, biscuits and fruit from around the world. Geoff was the quizmaster for the evening. Although the questions were hard, people did say they had learnt a lot about Fairtrade. Sue was worried that she did not have enough food, but there was plenty and there are cakes & biscuits (unopened!) left for next Wednesday night.
And for those interested in recycling, the plastic "glasses" were washed after Paul & Pam's wine tasting evening and will be washed again and saved for future use. The banana, orange & pineapple skins all went into our compost bins, along with the paper plates & cardboard wrappers. Obviously the bottles will be recycled as well, so very little went into our refuse sack.
If you wnt more information about Fairtrade visit their website http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/
March 04 Alison's Walk in The Derbyshire DalesPhotos of Alison walk have been added. Report will follow soon. March 03 Forrester's Arms Pub NightVery busy pub. Car park was nearly full. we met Phil at the bar and we just found some seats. Then Ian and rosmary came and just got two seats. the rest of the room was full of lads smoking away. So little smokie. Then Sue & Geoff came and for some reason the large party of lads got up and went. So plenty of seats for us all. (so not sure what the locals are like. But i never seen a pub empty so fast.)
Last but not least to turn up out on a Rover ticket, was Mike. Just a few hours on parole but he soon was knocking them back, just like his youthful days.
March 01 Castile La Moncha And Aragon Slide ShowHarvey was showing slides from his cycling trip to Spain from last year. He flew with easy jet to madrid. where he rode in the mountains of spain. Away from the known spots of spain. Eating proper spanish food and wine. No roast beef with yorkshire pudding.
End of the night colin was giving away free Colin Prior 2007 Scotland calendars |
