    Healey Dell & Knowl Hill

So what did all the members who were away in Spain, Egypt, Amsterdam etc miss?  A superb walk over the moors north of Rochdale.  4 members started from the Healey Dell nature reserve on a fine autumn's morning to ascend the first of many hills, Hunger Hill (318m).  No we didn't have our morning coffee stop on the summit as it was blowing a gale!  The sky was a mixture of storm clouds and blue sky.  It was good to see that it was raining over Manchester & Oldham and leaving us well alone!
Descending we found shelter under some cliffs where Helen and Campbell thought about putting their climbing wall experience to good use and scaling them.  Our second hill was Knowl Hill (419m) which brought us onto the moors amongst the wind turbines.  We seeked shelter behind one of the turbines for a spot of lunch before walking on upto Higher Hill (454m) and Hail Storm Hill - thankfully it didn't live upto to its name!!
We returned to Healey Dell via Rooley Moor Road, an old packhorse route.  As we descended down to Spring Moss reservoir and the Dell the sun was out lighting up the surrounding Pennine moors to end a splendid day's walk in an area we don't often visit.

    Derwent walk - Vince

From a very bad start it turned into a gorgeous day with not a cloud in the sky. One member of the group was temporarily lost in the woods.
Up on Derwent Ridge we were treated to some excellent views.
(report dictated by Joan to Sue in the pub! - Colin please check for typing errors!!)

And everyone remembered their sleeping bags!

    Glenridding Hostel weekend
24 members of Stockport Walking & Outdoor Group and Sale Walking & Activity Group enjoyed an autumn weekend in the Lakes.
We travelled up through awful rain and mist but Saturday dawned bright and clear and improved during the day. We walked up to Red Tarn then most of the group went left up onto Striding Edge. Four of us went right to tackle Swirl Edge and two of the party even made it to the top!
Back at the hostel we had tea and home made cakes - well done to the Helens that was a brilliant idea.
Following showers a few went down to the pub in the village before returning for a group meal of garlic bread, chilli, salad, puddings, cheese & biscuits and of course wine!
thank you to everyone who helped with the meal, especially Chris and Wendy for their vat of chilli.
And thanks of course to Chris H for keeping the home fire burning!
Sunday was another nice day and I need to hand over to someone else for the report on the main walk to St Sunday Crag as I did a shorter walk with Geoff & Phil at Brotherswater.
